Why Nigerians Refuse to Pay Before Delivery — And How One Company Cracked the Code & Shattered the Barrier
The Nigerian E-Commerce Dilemma: Trust, Cash, and Delivery 🇳🇬
Picture this: You’ve built an online store. Your products are high-quality, your marketing is on point, and customers are adding items to their carts. But at checkout? Sales vanish.
Why? Because in Nigeria, most shoppers refuse to pay before delivery.
The Trust Barrier
Nigerian consumers have been burned too many times — by fake stores, counterfeit products, and sellers who take money and disappear. As a result, ~70% of e-commerce transactions rely on Cash on Delivery (COD).
But for merchants, COD is a nightmare:
❌ High costs: Managing logistics, warehousing, and last-mile delivery is expensive.
❌ Payment delays: Waiting for couriers to collect and remit cash kills cash flow.
❌ Fraud risks: Fake orders, rejected deliveries, and lost packages drain profits.
❌ No scalability: Stuck serving only local regions? Growth is impossible.
The result? Many businesses either:
- 🚫 Avoid COD (losing 70% of customers).
- 🚫 Struggle with inefficient logistics (eating into profits).
- 🚫 Give up on Nigeria’s massive e-commerce potential.
Nigeria’s e-commerce industry is booming — but trust remains its biggest obstacle.

- Major barrier: Trust and fraud concerns

What problem is Selligate solving and how are they solving it?
E-commerce business owners experience pains in fulfilling customers’ orders due to the prevailing “pay on delivery” demand from Nigerian customers.
This payment method helps customers avoid the issue of “what I got versus what I ordered” but many customers abuse it as they end up rejecting the products sent with some flimsy excuses.
This is frustrating the merchant because logistics costs, marketing costs, and human efforts are wasted thereby making it impossible to scale and grow e-commerce businesses in Nigeria.
We have built a robust application that helps myriads of e-commerce businesses deliver their products within same day of the order through the following services to mitigate the pains associated with “pay on delivery”.
Storage (Warehousing): Secure and efficient storage solutions for merchant’s inventory, ensuring safekeeping and easy access.
Speedy Order Delivery: Once we receive the merchant customer’s order, we quickly swing into action and ensure it is professionally delivered to the customer within same day.
Automatic Payment Settlement: Once the order is delivered, payment received from the merchant customer will be credited to his or her account automatically.

What is your delivery cost?
Our default delivery cost is ₦5,000. Depending on distance, it could be more than that but if the delivery would attract extra cost, we will inform you ahead.
What is your warehousing cost?
Selligate warehousing is free as long as there is a continuous stock turn, but if you have no completed order on your account for 30 days, we will start charging a warehousing fee of ₦1,000 per day.
Once the accrued warehousing fee exceeds the value of your available stock, your account will be deactivated, and your products will be disposed of.
We therefore strongly advise that, if you stop giving us orders to deliver your products for any reason, you move your remaining stock from our warehouse within the 30-day window to avoid warehousing fees or product disposal.
If I bring my product to your office/warehouse in bulk, can you help me distribute it to your other locations?
Yes, we can help you do that at a cost and with your instructions using our VIP Bulk Product Movements service. The minimum fee for this is ₦7,200. Note that this is optional as you can move your product in bulk to any of our locations by any means of your choice.
Do you do pick-up?

The only cost you should expect apart from delivery is withdrawal fee of 1% + ₦100 (capped at ₦2,000).
Do you charge for packaging?
Apart from the delivery fee and withdrawal fee, we don’t charge for anything. However, if you need our assistance in some areas like packaging, pack/airport/seaport pick-up, or interstate product movements, we can agree on the cost with you but they are optional. For international sellers, we have a Call Center Service for ₦79,000 monthly (Optional) and Local Marketing Expert Support for ₦70,000 monthly (Recommended).
How safe are my products in your warehouse, and who bears any loss?
Your products are secure in our custody, and we are responsible for their safekeeping.

Yes. We have a standard agreement for Selligate and the merchant to sign for the partnership. This helps to establish trust and mutual understanding between both parties.
Do you have the option of customer pick-up?

What are the suitable products for your order fulfillment services?
We accept legally acceptable products in Nigeria that have a maximum weight of 10kg, are non-perishable, and are properly packaged.
Do you charge for failed deliveries?
It is a two-way scenario in one: a. If we call the customer and he says he is not ready or no longer interested, we won’t charge you. It’s free! b. If we call the customer and he asks us to come and deliver, we will go immediately. If the customer rejects the product based on “what I ordered versus what I got” or any other flimsy excuses, or the customer switch off phone when the rider arrives the location, we will charge 75% of the delivery fee because we have already visited the customer.
I am not in Nigeria, how do I receive my withdrawals?
When you make a wallet withdrawal in Naira, we will help you convert the amount to US Dollars at the prevailing exchange rate and send it to your account. Usually, you receive the payment within 24 hours of making the withdrawal.
